Starting a business takes a shit ton of work and commitment but if you’re eager and keen, its more than possible. I Didn’t necessarily want to dive into how I got Retro Laundry up and running but wanted to touch on some very important tips to get you started. In light of everything happening in the world right now, there isn’t really a better time to start. Opening a business is probably the most satisfying thing I’ve personally ever done. Something that is completely yours and something you get to watch grow and develop.
Fun fact: prepare to get overwhelmed, frustrated but equally just as excited.
Before you do anything, just think. Think fuck loads and then think a bit more. What exactly is your idea? Is there demand? Have you asked your friends and family what they think? Do you have a genuine interest in what you’re going to sell? Are you going to 100% commit and sacrifice a bit $$ to get it off the ground? These are just some of the important questions to consider.
What I personally did was buy a massive whiteboard from my local Officeworks and just started brainstorming like a savage - Probably for about a week. These are some of the topics I covered.
- ABN registration
- Graphic designers – where and how
- Finance situation
- Suppliers
- Social media – influencers/growth
- Website ideas
- Photography set up/ where/how you will be taking photos
Once all these topics are clear and concise in your head, make moves. If you have a close family member or friend that has there own business, reach out. Most people are there to help and I think its important to appreciate you’re new to it and be willing to learnnn - soak it all up like a sponge. From this, start making calls – be it potential graphic designers, that family member or the Tax Office; there is ALWAYS something you can do.
Though it may seem a bit daunting, all it takes is for YOU to get started. Once you start, you won’t look back and you can proudly say you fucking own something. Such a surreal feeling and I guarantee you wont regret it.
Feel free to reach out if you had any questions.
